Difference between confidence and arrogance

Difference between confidence and arrogance

(SCROLL DOWN FOR THE VIDEO!!)

Being a scientist is a lot about having the knowledge and the skill, but there is one other important ingredient that’s been overlooked that has a huge impact on your results!

It’s your mindset, and in particular your confidence!

You may have heard me saying: confidence is everything for your success! And yet I get to speak to so many scientists, especially women in science who share that they don’t have confidence and they feel bad about themselves.

I always encourage my listeners: increasing your confidence needs to be your daily job! But often they have the worry of being afraid to become too pushy, too arrogant, “too much in the face”.

This is a question I’ve got after I presented a webinar on confidence for women in science: What is the difference between confidence and arrogance?

Here is my take on this: a confident person knows who they are, what they know and what they don’t know, and they are open to learning new things, open to being corrected or to making a mistake. An arrogant person thinks or appears as if they know everything, and they are not open to be wrong or making a mistake. They are not open to learning new things. In fact, often an arrogant person uses arrogance to compensate the lack of true confidence…

Watch this video to hear me talk more about confidence, how it affects our work and life and what we can do to increase it. This is the FB LIVE session from earlier this week: the questions from the participants included impostor syndrome, how to prepare a presentation if you struggle with confidence, and what to do if you have a strong feeling of not being good enough. Watch the video to hear my answers and advice:

Also on Friday, the 18th of May, at 8am BST I will be giving a webinar on the topic of Confidence:
“Confidence 101 for Women in STEM: how to overcome the impostor syndrome and become more confident without feeling like a bitch”
Please join me: I will be presenting very useful slides and materials, and I will be also joined LIVE by other women in science who will share their experience in overcoming their worries and fears and becoming more confident!

You don’t need to be arrogant to have confidence. All you need is a good education (in my case, i’ve studied at https://www.uautonoma.cl/ ,values taught at home) to be an excellent person.

    Great post, regards!
